NRP Student Outreach Initiatives

Two of the seven primary goals of all Nu Rho Psi chapters are:

  • increase public awareness of neuroscience and its benefits for the individual and society and…

  • encourage service to the community.

In a recent post in NEURONLINE – the Society for Neuroscience, their is a description of the outreach programming that was developed at Carnegie Mellon University by Meredith Schmehl (currently a Ph.D. candidate at Duke University). The program was featured at the 2018 SFN meeting and in the video of the SFN workshop presentation – Bringing a Student-Run Outreach program to Your Institution.

Here is the link to the  NEURONLINE article: Start and Lead a Student Outreach Group at Your Institution

If your chapter has developed some successful outreach programs, consider sharing them with the Nu Rho Psi Council .  Remember, chapters may apply for annual activity grants for co-curricular  programs associated with the annual Nu Rho Psi theme.

The 2019-2020 Theme is Brain/Machine Interfaces

2019 Midbrains Conference

The MidBrains Undergraduate Neuroscience Conference will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, at Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill.  We hope you and your students will attend!

Registration is now open and abstract submission will open on Monday, August 12th. The deadline to register and/or submit an abstract is Saturday, September 7th. There is no registration fee, thanks to the generosity of our sponsoring institutions.

We are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker will be Dr. Ryan LaLumiere from the University of Iowa. Dr. LaLumiere’s research is focused on the neuroscience of memory and drug addiction.  See his laboratory website here.

The MidBrains conference gives undergraduates the chance to present research findings, attend lectures and special panels, and meet other undergrads interested in the neurosciences. Representatives from a number of major research universities will be present to discuss graduate school opportunities. Students are encouraged to submit abstracts in all fields of the neurosciences and related disciplines.

If you know anyone (colleagues, students, etc.) who might be interested in attending this year’s conference, please forward this information to them and encourage them to join the MidBrains mailing list.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any additional questions. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you at MidBrains 2019.
