In addition to my post-baccalaureate research fellowship in the National Institute of Mental Health, participating as an Academy Fellow will cultivate my intellectual curiosity on factors that relate to health disparities and what is currently being done to address the gaps. The workshops, career panels, and diversity retreat will provide the opportunity to learn how to serve as an effective advocate in mitigating injustices within medicine directly from health scientists. Most importantly, I have the chance to work with experts to design and implement a yearlong community outreach project. I look forward to developing a project geared towards addressing the mental health disparity within the African American community. The NIH Academy Fellowship aligns with my career aspirations of becoming a clinician-scientist with a health disparities research focus." He has been a member and faculty advisor since its founding in 2013. Three years later, his students' efforts were recognized with Nu Rho Psi's 2016 Chapter of the Year award. Dr. Black has a passion for teaching and public outreach and was awarded the 2009 Society for Neuroscience Next Generation Award for his coordination of Atlanta area neuroscience public outreach efforts. He loves neuroscience because there is so much we do not yet understand, and it is so pertinent to our daily lives. Not only has she been an eager volunteer for GSU’s NRP outreach events, but she has also been resourceful and outstandingly prepared! Congratulations Dana💓 Thank you for being such a wonderful member of GSU’s NRP Chapter🧠 Background on Dana: She is a Neuroscience major in the dual M.S/B.S program at #georgiastateuniversity currently in the M.S. portion of the program and will be obtaining her Masters in May 2020. Why she chose Neuroscience? “I enjoy studying behavior and the mechanisms underlying it, which lead me to become a neuroscience major in the first place because it could help me find these answers” Current Research: “Right now I’m currently working in Dr. Derby lab where I study White Pacific Shrimp, which are major species in shrimp aquaculture, and I am looking into their chemosensory basis of feeding behavior” Our FAVORITE question- Why Nu Rho Psi? “I decided to join NPR because i really wanted to get more involved in Neuroscience outside of the classroom and I think NPR was the perfect opportunity to do so” #nurhopsi #nurhopsiatgsu #neuroscience #research #neuroscienceresearch #stem #poncecitymarket

GSU’s Nu Rho Psi Chapter helped assist with the art show and we are excited to showcase the “Darth Vader’s Neural Pathways” art piece by a fellow Neuroscience undergraduate student.
