Brain Awareness Week is an initiative started by the Dana Foundation in 1995 to increase public awareness and outreach into communities of the incredible brain research happening around the globe.
Our chapters celebrate Brain Awareness Week in a variety of ways – check them out!
Drake University (β-IL)
For their Brain Awareness Week, supported by a Nu Rho Psi Chapter Activity Grant, the Drake University chapter hosted multiple events, including a journal club that sparked on lively discussion about the article Altered functional brain networks in problematic smartphone and social media use: resting-state fMRI study by Áfra, E., Janszky, J., Perlaki, G. et al.

Weber State University (α-UT)

Weber State University students take time during their spring break to host Brain Awareness Week outreach events. They particularly focus on outreach to local K-12 schools and have an ongoing partnership with their local children’s museum where they set up stations for kid-friendly experiments, including optical illusions and a “Flavor Station” where participants plug their nose, close their eyes, eat a jellybean, and try to guess the flavor! Randolph-Macon University’s Nu Rho Psi chapter, supported by a Nu Rho Psi Chapter Activity Grant, teamed up to collaborate with the Student Health, the Academic Resource Center, and Student Counseling Services at Randolph-Macon to provide information to students about the various impacts of Social Media on the brain. Their events included three tabling events on how social media impacts body image; unplugging when studying and how attention is impacted by social media; and the intersection of social media, the focus on “likes”, bullying, and the impact on mood.
