2026 SfN Travel Grants | So you submitted your SfN abstract, what now? Part 1

Is this is your first or second time attending SfN? Have no fear! We’ll be posting a series full of information about SfN and presenting your research.

Part 1 begins now, and we’re chatting about all things travel grants!

What is a travel grant? Travel grants provide funding subsidies to offset the cost of attending SfN. 

Before we get into specific breakdowns of each award, here are your important dates:

SfN Trainee Professional Development Award (TPDA)

SfN offers their own travel award, where non-faculty* researchers can receive complimentary registration and up to $1000 for North American SfN members (or $2000 for SfN members from other countries/continents).

Materials required:

  • CV
  • One-page letter of recommendation 
  • Copy of applicant’s abstract submission
  • Short essay (500 words) on how attending SfN will further your professional goals
    • Undergraduates may write their essay on why they chose to pursue neuroscience
    • Essay should speak to a personal experience that has had broader impact on interest or career in science. 

Eligibility:

  • Must be presenting author on abstract (only one presenting author may apply for the TPDA)
  • Must be current member of SfN
  • Currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate student, a postbaccalaureate member, a postdoctoral scholar, or be starting an educational program shortly after award is given
  • Must not be a recipient of another SfN travel grant during this calendar year or previous calendar year.

*non-faculty includes undergraduate students, graduate students, post-baccalaureate researchers and postdoctoral scholars.

Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience Travel Grant

FUN is sponsoring up to $1,000 to defray travel costs associated with attending SfN. Nu Rho Psi is proud to continue our support of FUN’s Travel Grants. This year, NRP will be sponsoring 2 awards for Nu Rho Psi members! 

Please note: The faculty sponsor must be the one who submits the application, and they must be a dues-paying member of FUN in good standing. 

Materials required:

  • CV
  • Statement from faculty sponsor 
  • Statement from student candidate
  • Abstract submission/acceptance

Eligibility:

  • Must be presenting author on abstract
  • Presented research must have been completed during undergraduate studies/prior to graduation (student does not have to be an undergraduate at time of submission or presenting at SfN)
  • Must not have received a FUN Travel Grant in previous years

Nu Rho Psi Travel Grant application window

Nu Rho Psi members can receive up to $1500 in travel funding for those presenting research at SfN. Travel funding can cover the conference registration fee, housing accommodations, transportation costs, food (up to $50/day), and parking. 

Applications open mid-to-late August and will close mid-September, with awardee notification in late September. 

Typical applicants are undergrads, but post-bacc and graduate student members who are presenting on results from their undergraduate research are eligible to apply, as well. 

Materials required:

  • CV
  • Personal statement on how attending SfN will benefit you
  • Letter from research advisor supporting your application
  • Abstract submission/acceptance
  • Spreadsheet of estimated travel expenses

Eligibility:

  • Must be a Nu Rho Psi member inducted at a Nationally-recognized chapter
  • Must be presenting author on abstract and be attending SfN in Washington D.C. 
  • Must not have received a Nu Rho Psi Travel Grant in the past

Priority will be given to 2 members in each region.
