Exercise & The Brain! 🏋🏽‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️🏊🏿‍♂️🧠

There are hundreds of different ways to exercise, and many different ways exercise affects our brains and bodies throughout our life. We encourage chapters to explore this topic through programming, journal clubs, partnership events with other clubs or organizations, guest speakers, community outreach, and MORE!

One way we hope to facilitate this is through Nu Rho Psi Chapter Activity Grants (CAG): Receive up to $300 in funding to support chapter activities promoting public awareness of the brain and/or service to the community during the 2023-2024 Academic Year. CAG Proposals are due Friday, October 6! Link to the application is in our bio.

Previous projects have included: Creating a video series that would be used in outreach; hosting a 5k event and informational booth at the event; hosting a research symposium, featuring undergraduate research presentations; upgrading models to be used in demonstrations at local schools; and more! All previously funded projects can be found on our Awards & Grants page.

Your imagination is the limit on what your chapter can do!

*Applicants must have a Google account to complete Google form.

Senior Spotlight: James Wairagu - Wayne State Univ Senior Spotlight: James Wairagu - Wayne State University (β-MI) ‘23 🎓✨

James Wairagu is an incredible, passionate, and deeply curious Honors graduate of Wayne State’s Neuroscience department and a top student of the Wayne Med-Direct (B.S./M.D.) program.

The value of education was instilled in Wairagu from a young age, as was diligently exploring & pursuing his interests, goals, and opportunities. Like many in high school, the question “what do i want to do after” was prominent. His interest in medicine was clear, and to be absolutely sure of that, he pursued another interest: planes! After joining the Civil Air Patrol and getting a glimpse at the potential life of a pilot, he was sure that it wasn’t for him. Inspired by his mother, a registered nurse, Wairagu returned to his original interest in medicine and volunteered at a local hospital in the occupational therapy, physical therapy, and oncology departments. This volunteer experience affirmed Wairagu’s interest in pursuing medicine, which led him to researching the path needed to become a physician, applying to B.S./M.D. programs around the country, and eventually bringing him to his academic home at Wayne State.

During his time at Wayne State, Wairagu served as the Vice President for WSU’s Nu Rho Psi chapter (β-MI), was a member of the student organizations Temple Campus Ministries, the Black Student Union, and the Wayne African Student Society, and worked as an ophthalmic scribe at the Kresge Eye Institute. James has been accepted to the Wayne State School of Medicine, and will be taking a gap year to pursue his M.B.A. at the Ilitch School of Business before enrolling in medical school. Congratulations James on graduating, all of your accomplishments and success so far. May your journey, curiosity, and pursuits continue to be rich and bountiful - the world is yours! 🧠🎓💫
